A monthly digest of light, leisure, and living well — from Sonrei.

Melanin, Winter Light & SPF Education

February carries a softer kind of brightness. The days are still short, but the light feels intentional — a pause before momentum returns. This month’s Sun Dial is about care, reflection, and honoring the many ways light shows up in our lives.

New here? Sonrei is sunscreen designed to blend seamlessly into your life. The Sun Dial is our way of sharing that philosophy with you.

Myth of the Month

“Melanated skin doesn’t need sunscreen.”

While melanin provides some natural UV protection, it does not prevent sun damage, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, or skin cancer. Broad-spectrum SPF is essential for skin health and longevity across every skin tone.

Data Drop

Melanin-rich skin has an estimated natural SPF of approximately 13 — but that is not sufficient for full UV protection. Research also shows that individuals with darker skin tones are more likely to be diagnosed with skin cancer at later stages due to under-protection and delayed detection.

Quick Ritual

Apply SPF daily to face, neck, chest, and hands — areas most prone to pigmentation changes and cumulative exposure.

✨ The Bright Side

Little sparks of joy this season.

  • The Winter Olympics return, where athletes compete under some of the brightest conditions on earth — snow reflecting light, movement, and human possibility.

  • Couture houses including Dior, Schiaparelli, and Iris van Herpen are unveiling collections inspired by translucence, reflection, and light during Paris couture season.

  • Museums and cultural spaces worldwide are extending daylight hours for exhibitions — proof that winter light still deserves an audience.

As ever, a reminder: light is worth celebrating, in every season.
